How Do You Set Gaming Time Limits for Kids?
Simply declaring "30 minutes a day" rarely works — children often don't follow rules they had no hand in creating. Rules that stick need the child to feel a sense of ownership.
Steps for setting rules: ① Ask the child first: "How many hours of gaming do you think is okay per day?" ② After hearing their answer, calculate together whether sleep, study, meals, and family time can still be protected. ③ Reach an agreement: "Let's do one hour after homework is done." ④ Adding positive incentives like "follow the rules and get 30 extra minutes on weekends" makes them easier to keep.
When rules are broken: Rather than scolding, explore together "why couldn't you follow it?" "I was in the middle of a boss fight and couldn't stop" might lead to the solution "choose games with save points."
Device settings can also help. Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android all have screen time limit features. Framing it as "the app is managing the rules we made together" rather than "parents set this" reduces conflict.
Enriched After-School Time Is a Natural Solution
When kids have more to do at the After-School Lab, game time often naturally falls into place. Fun alternative activities are the best approach.
