On Wednesday, April 8, 2026, the Digital Kodomo BASE After-School Lab officially opened at Imoya Ponpoko, a beloved community space in central Ota City, Tokyo. 16 children showed up for the very first session — filling the room with energy and enthusiasm for two full hours.
About Imoya Ponpoko
Imoya Ponpoko is a well-loved community gathering place rooted in the Chuo 4-chome neighborhood of Ota City. Ms. Kimura, who runs the space, generously offered us the venue every Wednesday afternoon with the hope that we would create a welcoming place for children in the neighborhood. Her kindness made this program possible, and it is a perfect reminder of what community support can create.
What Is the After-School Lab?
The After-School Lab is a free digital space for children from elementary school through high school. Every participant gets their own laptop, and they are free to explore at their own pace with support from volunteers and tech professionals.
Basic computer skills · Typing · Office software · Programming · AI tools ·
Minecraft · Roblox · Game development · Video production — whatever you want to try!
The goal is not a structured class — it is a place where children can follow their curiosity, play alongside friends, and naturally build digital skills along the way. At the first session on April 8th, some children dove into Minecraft, others focused on typing, and a few tried programming for the very first time. Sixteen participants on day one told us clearly: children in this neighborhood have been waiting for exactly this kind of space.
