Many parents have asked their child, "Do you use AI at school?" and gotten the answer, "No, we don't." The news keeps saying that generative AI is coming to schools, yet it never seems to come up as a story about your own child's classroom.
There is a clear reason for that distance.
Where things stand: an experiment at 478 schools
On April 30, 2026, Japan's Ministry of Education (MEXT) published a document summarizing its efforts so far on AI in school education. According to it, the generative AI pilot school program for fiscal 2026 includes 10 municipalities for educational use in class, 100 municipalities for administrative use by teachers, and 51 municipalities for teaching-material trials — 149 municipalities and 478 schools in total, excluding overlaps.

・December 2024: Guidelines revised to Ver. 2.0, built around "human-centered use," with key points and checklists for schools
・Fiscal 2026: Generative AI pilot schools expand to 149 municipalities and 478 schools — 10 municipalities for classroom use, 100 for administrative use, 51 for teaching-material trials
478 schools is a number that looks big but is small. Japan has roughly 33,000 elementary, junior high, and high schools combined, and 478 — a figure that itself includes high schools — is less than 2% of them. Look at the breakdown, and the largest share is teachers' administrative use; "educational use," where children themselves use generative AI in class, covers only 10 municipalities. The government is still at the stage of testing benefits and problems, not yet at the stage of having children use it broadly. The era of "learning AI at school" has begun — but it is realistic to assume it will take years to reach your child's classroom.
Children's contact with AI is growing outside school first
Meanwhile, children's opportunities to encounter generative AI are increasing without waiting for schools. Auto-generated summaries appear in smartphone search results, and AI is built into video and study apps. While schools build the capacity to teach "the right way to use it," children are exposed to generative AI output every day. A time lag has opened up between the preparation of those who teach and the reality of those who use.
What MEXT's Guidelines Ver. 2.0 place at the center is "human-centered" use: do not accept AI's answers as they are; a human checks and judges in the end. This principle is not something acquired in class alone — it becomes a habit by being repeated in everyday situations where AI is actually used.
What families and communities can do while waiting their turn
Children at schools not among the 478 are not without options. What families can do is concrete. Try using generative AI together with your child, and when an answer comes back, look it up once more — "is this actually true?" That alone starts to change AI in the child's eyes from "a box that gives answers" into "a tool you use while verifying." Junior high and high school students can start today, on their own, as practice in testing their own questions.
Digital Kodomo BASE runs free, hands-on places in Ota City, Tokyo, where children use computers to work with generative AI and programming. It will take time for the pilot schools' results to spread to classrooms nationwide, and children's time keeps moving in the meantime. Rather than only waiting for schools to be ready, we are expanding places in homes and communities where children practice "using while verifying."
