Q.

How Can Kids Use a Computer for Test Prep?

A.Using it as a support tool for searching, organizing, and memorizing is most effective. Trying to do everything on a computer can actually backfire.

There are effective and ineffective ways to use a computer for test preparation.

Effective uses: ① Watch explanation videos on YouTube or NHK for School for difficult topics (visual learning is powerful) ② Use Quizlet (free) or Anki to create digital flashcards for vocabulary and dates ③ Create summary notes in Google Docs (accessible from anywhere) ④ Search the web to dig deeper into textbook content.

Things to avoid: studying in an environment where social media and video sites are open; losing focus after long screen sessions — these defeat the purpose. Using only study-related browser tabs and setting a timer (Pomodoro Technique: 25 minutes focused, 5-minute break) helps a lot.

Balancing handwriting and computer use is also important. Research shows that handwriting is better for retention (Mueller & Oppenheimer, 2014, Princeton University). A practical combination: use a computer to search and organize, and pen and paper to memorize.

We support balancing schoolwork with digital activities

At the After-School Lab, many children come after finishing their homework — using digital activities as a fun reward after study time.
