Why we go out to schools and communities
Some children have a computer they can use freely at home, and some do not. Home circumstances create gaps in chances to experience digital technology.
School and community events bring together many children who would not otherwise come to Digital Kodomo BASE. By going to them, we can give many children at once a first experience of "computers are fun" and "I made something myself."
From there, children who want to do more can connect with Houkago Lab or online materials they can use at home. So that every child, whatever their family situation, can gain digital skills and widen their own future choices. That is why we keep going out.
A first "I did it" for every child.
What we can do
We shape each session to the age, number of children and time available. These are examples of what we have done so far.
Programming in Minecraft
Children build programs by combining blocks inside Minecraft. Even children new to computers can take part.
Digital Chase Game
A game of tag in a school built in Minecraft, running from the hunters. Many children can enjoy it at festivals and events.
Make games with AI
Children make their own games by giving instructions to AI. Games can be posted to the AI Game Plaza.
AI lessons and talks
For junior high students, parents and local residents: where AI is today, and how to live with it.
Information literacy
Children learn to check online information and AI answers rather than take them at face value, with hands-on activities such as a fake-image quiz.
Network security
From how the internet connects, to making passwords, how unauthorized access and online scams work, and staying safe on social media: the basics children need to protect themselves.
Career talk: IT engineer
Our president, who has worked as an IT engineer for more than 25 years, talks about what engineers actually do and the path that led there.
Starting a business
Our president, who founded his own company, talks about why he decided to start it, and the fun and challenges of creating your own work.

Voices from children and parents
From children
"Minecraft, which I always play, is even more fun when you program it."
"The AI quiz made me want to be careful not to fall for scams."
"I learned it's better not to hand everything to AI, but to use AI as a base."
"The teacher explained kindly, and I learned how to use a keyboard and mouse."
From parents
"At home my child plays Minecraft on a game console, but learning things you can only do on a computer seemed like great fun."
"I got to watch for a little while, and my child was having a great time with friends they had just met."
"It's a field we parents can't teach well, so we're grateful for this opportunity."
"As a parent, it helps to have a place where children can gather."
These are comments from people who joined Digital Kodomo BASE events, with some wording changed so that children and families cannot be identified.
Almost no work for teachers and PTAs
We bring the computers
We bring up to 20. It's fine if the venue has none.
Planning, setup and cleanup
We draft a plan for the grade and time available, and handle setup and cleanup on the day.
A blog report afterward
After talking with the school, we write about the day on our blog, which can also be used in school newsletters.
We are an NPO in Ota City. There are no fees, no sales and no membership pitches. We consult the school before posting any photos online.
For organizations working with children
Children who find school hard and children with developmental differences take part in Houkago Lab and Furatto Lab. We would be glad to exchange ideas with people who support children, such as after-school day services, free schools, parent groups, education support centers and school social workers. Other NPOs, volunteer groups for children, children's cafeterias and groups that provide places to belong are also very welcome.
- Visiting our activities (Houkago Lab, Furatto Lab)
- Exchanging ideas on how computers and AI can be used in support
- Talking about running events or courses together
We see the same children, so let's think about it together.
Visits are scheduled around the children's activities. Please contact us in advance.
FAQ
We don't have enough computers.
We bring up to 20. For larger groups, we can plan together, for example by taking turns or adding content children can enjoy watching.
Can you come outside Ota City?
We focus on Ota City for now. Depending on the date and content, we may be able to come elsewhere, so please ask.
How far in advance should we ask?
Please contact us as soon as your date is set. We coordinate with our staff and volunteers.
Invite Digital Kodomo BASE to your school or community event.
It's fine if your date or plan isn't set yet. Just ask, "Could you do something like this?" We are also happy to help with ward and board of education programs, community courses for children, and teacher training.Email: admin@digitalkodomo.jp
