Q.

My Child Says AI Is Their Friend — What Should I Do?

A. Don't dismiss it right away. Start by asking, "What do you like about it?" and listen to what your child has to say.

It's actually quite natural for children to see AI as a friend. AI never criticizes, always responds, and never gets angry. For kids who are tired of navigating social dynamics at school, that kind of presence can feel genuinely comforting.

That said, AI is a program — it has no emotions. Calling it a "friend" isn't necessarily a problem, but if your child starts thinking "I don't need human friends as long as I have AI," that may be a signal that they need some support.

The most important thing is to ask why your child likes the AI. If they say "because it never gets mad when I make mistakes" or "I can talk to it anytime," those answers may reveal underlying anxiety or fatigue around real-world relationships. Rather than rejecting the attachment to AI, try to address what's underneath it.

AI conversations can also serve as "practice." There are cases where children who were afraid to talk to people started by chatting with AI, and gradually became more comfortable talking to humans too. Think of AI as a stepping stone — a starting point, not a destination.
