🎮 Gaming & Screen Time
Q.

Does Too Much Screen Time Affect Children's Eyesight?

A.Yes, it does. Research shows that prolonged near-focus tasks — not just screen viewing — are linked to the progression of myopia (nearsightedness).

Research from the Japan Ophthalmological Society and the International Myopia Institute shows a correlation between increased screen time and rising rates of myopia. The key problem is not "looking at screens" per se, but "focusing on close objects for extended periods" combined with "reduced outdoor activity."

How myopia develops: When eye muscles strain to focus on near objects for long periods, the shape of the eyeball changes, making it harder to see at a distance. Children are more susceptible than adults because their eyes are still developing.

Prevention tips: ① The 20-20-20 rule (every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet / 6m away for 20 seconds) ② 2 hours of outdoor activity per day (research suggests sunlight helps prevent myopia) ③ Keep at least 30cm distance from the screen ④ Use screens in a well-lit room ⑤ Stop screen use 1 hour before bed (sleep quality also affects eyesight).

"Banning screens entirely" is not realistic. Incorporating these habits into daily life can minimize the impact while still enjoying digital technology. Don't forget regular eye checkups (once a year).

We balance outdoor play with digital activities

At the After-School Lab, we are mindful of combining indoor digital activities with outdoor play. Healthy eyes and a healthy mind.
