How to Handle Hurtful Words Without Letting Them Decide Your Worth

When someone says something bad to you, the words may stay in your head. There may be days when you find yourself almost believing it, "I wonder if that's really true." When researching or preparing for a presentation, there are times when it is important not to make a decision based on the first answer you find.

Someone else's harsh words do not decide your value, even when they hurt.

keep a distance in your heart

When someone says something bad to you, the first thing to do is to separate the words from the other person's words. It is important not to take it too much into yourself. If you feel like talking back will put you in danger, it is important to leave the situation.

Don't carry it alone

It keeps happening over and over, it's painful, it's so painful that I don't want to go to school. If this happens, talk to your teacher, family, or other trusted adult. Asking for help is not a defeat.

What you can do today
When someone says something you don't like, try saying to yourself, "These are the other person's words. They're not my whole story."
