最上級の作り方（規則変化）

序数（second, third）との組み合わせ
the second + 最上級：2番目に〜
例：Mt. Kita is the second highest mountain in Japan.
（北岳は日本で2番目に高い山）
the third + 最上級：3番目に〜
例：He is the third tallest in the class.
like を使った比較 ── like A better than B／like A the best
like A the best (of / in ...)：「（〜の中で）Aが一番好きだ」
I like summer better than winter.（私は冬より夏のほうが好きだ）
She likes tennis the best of all sports.（彼女はすべてのスポーツの中でテニスが一番好きだ）
Which season do you like the best?（どの季節が一番好きですか）— I like spring the best.
→ like は一般動詞なので、good/well の比較級・最上級 better／best をそのまま使う。「-est」を語尾につけたり、most を重ねて使ったりはしない（×the bestest、×like the most）。
- 最上級には必ず the をつける（特定の1つだから）

- 所有格（my, his）が前にあれば the は不要：my best friend
- 場所（単数）→ in 例：in Japan, in my class
- 複数のものの中で → of 例：of the three, of all

この章でつまずきやすいところ
最上級の文を読んだり書いたりしている途中、「the は要る？」「in と of のどっち？」「best って何の最上級だっけ？」と手が止まりがちです。本文を追いながら起きる迷いに絞り、見分け方を整理します。
the を付けるかどうかで迷ってしまう
- つまずく場面：教科書の She is the tallest in my class. を読んだあと、自分で英作文するときに「my best friend には the が無いのに、なぜこっちには the が付くの？」と迷い、書き出しで手が止まる場面。
- 克服のコツ：位置関係で見分けます。最上級の前に my / his / your などの所有格があれば the は不要、なければ the が必要。「所有格が席を取っているか」を確認してから書き始めると迷いません。
- ミニ例：○ She is the tallest in my class.／○ He is my best friend.（my があるので the は付けない）
in と of を日本語の「で」につられて選んでしまう
- つまずく場面：「3人の中で一番背が高い」を英訳する途中、日本語の「〜で」をそのまま in と置き換えて in the three と書いてしまい、本文の of the three を見て「あれ、どっち？」と迷う場面。
- 克服のコツ：範囲の形で見分けます。後ろが 場所・グループ（単数）なら in（in Japan / in my class）、後ろが複数のもの・allなら of（of the three / of all）。「単数か複数か」を先に見ると迷いません。
- ミニ例：○ Tom is the tallest in my class.（class は単数のグループ）／○ Tom is the tallest of the three.（the three は複数）
good の最上級を goodest と書きかけてしまう
- つまずく場面：練習問題で「good を最上級に」と言われ、つい goodest と書きかけ、本文の He is the best player on our team. を見て「best って good の仲間だっけ？」と止まる場面。
- 克服のコツ：不規則変化として覚えるしかない型があります。good / well → best、bad → worst、many / much → most、little → least。「-est を付けない4つ」と決めて、原級と最上級をセットで口に出すと定着します。
- ミニ例：○ This is the best movie I've ever seen.（good の最上級は best）／× the goodest movie
one of the best book と単数で書いてしまう
- つまずく場面：本文の応用表現 one of the best movies を読んだあと、自分で「世界で最高の映画の1つ」を英作文する途中、「one（1つ）だから単数？」と迷い、one of the best movie と書きそうになる場面。
- 克服のコツ：因果関係で見分けます。「最も〜なものの中の1つ」という意味なので、後ろの名詞は必ず複数形になります。意味の上で「複数のグループから1つ取り出す」形だから、と理由とセットで覚えると間違えません。
- ミニ例：○ This is one of the best movies in the world.／× one of the best movie（movies と複数にする）

国土地理院によると富士山の標高は3,776mで、日本で最も高い山です。だから教科書の Mt. Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan. は、範囲を in Japan で示した本当のことを述べた英文だとわかります。
「2番目に高い山」は北岳発展
国土地理院の標高データでは、富士山に次ぐ日本第2位の山は標高3,193mの北岳です。これは the second highest mountain in Japan、つまり「序数＋最上級」で Mt. Kita is the second highest mountain in Japan. と表せます。
世界で一番高い山はエベレスト発展
エベレストは2020年の中国・ネパール共同測量で標高8,848.86mとされ、地球上で海面から最も高い山です。範囲を in the world に変えれば Mt. Everest is the highest mountain in the world. となり、in Japan との使い分けが実感できます。
世界で一番広い国はロシア発展
アメリカCIAのデータでは、ロシアの面積は約17,098,242平方キロメートルで、世界で最も面積の大きい国です。教科書の Which is the largest country, China, Russia, or Canada? の答えが Russia is. になる理由が、公的な数字で確かめられます。
エベレストの「国境」と of の感覚実生活
エベレストの山頂は中国（チベット）とネパールの国境上にあります（標高8,848.86m）。最上級の of は「ある集団・特定の数の中から最も〜なものを選ぶ範囲」を表します。たとえば標高8,000mを超える14の山は eight-thousanders（8000m峰）という集団で、Mt. Everest is the highest of the eight-thousanders.（8000m峰の中で最も高い）のように of を使います。一方、世界という「場所」の中なら in を使い the highest mountain in the world となります。国境上にあること自体は of の用法とは関係ありません。
