「〜ということを…する」
※that の後にもう1つの文（主語+動詞）が来る。
仕組み ── 文の中に文を入れる
「He is kind.」（彼は親切だ）という文を
「I think 〜」（〜と思う）の 目的語として埋め込む
→ I think that he is kind.（彼は親切だと思う）
that のかたまりが「〜ということ」という名詞のかたまりになる
肯定文の例
I think (that) he is kind.（彼は親切だと思う）
I know (that) you are busy.（あなたが忙しいのを知っている）
She said (that) she would come.（来ると彼女は言った）
I hope (that) you are well.（元気でいることを願う）
I believe (that) he is honest.（彼は正直だと信じている）
We learned (that) the earth is round.（地球は丸いと学んだ）
He told me (that) he was hungry.（おなかが空いたと彼は私に話した）
that はよく省略される
特に think, know, hope, say, believe などの後では よく省略される
I think he is right. = I think that he is right.
I know you are busy. = I know that you are busy.
She said she was sick. = She said that she was sick.
→ 会話やくだけた文では that を省略するのが普通
→ テストでは that を入れて書くと安全
that 節と一緒によく使う動詞

否定文と疑問文
否定文：主節の動詞を否定（that 節の中ではなく外）
例：I don't think that he is right.（彼が正しいとは思わない）
日本語では「正しくないと思う」と言うが、英語では「正しいと思わない」と表現することが多い
疑問文：
例：Do you think that he is right? — Yes, I do. / No, I don't.
例：Did you know that she was sick?
that 節と感情の形容詞
I'm glad that you came.（来てくれて嬉しい）
I'm sorry that I'm late.（遅れてすみません）
I'm surprised that he passed.（合格して驚いている）
She was afraid that he might fail.
→ 「〜ということで感情を持つ」を表す
時制の一致
I think that he is kind.（彼は親切だと思う）
I thought that he was kind.（親切だと思っていた）
She says that she will come.
She said that she would come.
He knows that I am busy.
He knew that I was busy.
→ 主節を過去にしたら that 節の動詞も 過去寄りに
that 節が主語になることもある
That he is honest is true.（彼が正直なのは本当だ）
→ 堅い表現。実際は it を主語にすることが多い
It is true that he is honest.（同じ意味、こちらが自然）
It is important that you come.（あなたが来ることは重要だ）
It is clear that we won.（私たちが勝ったのは明らかだ）
- that の後には 主語＋動詞のセットが続く
- × I think that he kind.（動詞がない）
- ○ I think that he is kind.
- that の後は完全な文（主語＋動詞のセット）
- 主節が過去なら that 節も 過去寄りに
- × He said that he is busy.
- ○ He said that he was busy.
- 例外：不変の真理（地球は丸い、太陽は東から昇る等）はそのまま現在形
- 「正しくないと思う」は、英語では「正しいと思わない」
- × I think that he isn't right.（不自然）
- ○ I don't think that he is right.（自然）
- think, believe, suppose で特に頻出

- think / know / say などの後ろで使う。
- that は省略されることもある。
